VICTORIA, April 29—A two-hitter by Larry Ward, backed up by errorless ball, gave the Victoria Athletics their fourth straight win tonight, opening a series with Wenatchee by defeating the Chiefs, 5-2.
The 22-year-old Ward only allowed six men to reach base and held the Chiefs hitless for six and two-thirds innings.
It could have been a no-hitter. Ward had two strikes on left-hander Bill Wilson for the third out in the seventh when umpire Anderson called a close pitch a ball. Ward then bounced the next pitch off Wilson's head. Steve Andrade then doubled, Gene Gaviglio singled and two runs crossed.
That was Ward's only trouble spot. He struck out nine in going the distance.
Dan Danielson started Victoria's four-run fourth inning with a double off the centre field wall to score Charlie Balassi, who had singled. Danielson came in when Andrade bobbled Frank Cirimele's grounder to first. Ward and Jack Palmer both walked and two runs scored when Archie Wilson smashed a single.
Paul Jones flew out to left field and Palmer scored after the catch with the final run in the eighth.

VANCOUVER, April 29—Carl Gunnarson spun a six-hitter and Frank Mullens returned to the Vancouver line-up to hit three doubles in four trips to lead the Capilanos to a 4-2 win over the Spokane Indians.
Mullens doubled off the screen in the first to bring in a pair of runs, Joe Kaney scored in the fifth when he reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second, took third on the catcher's overthrow and scored on a wild pitch, and Charlie Mead singled in a run in the seventh.
Spokane had one hit until the sixth, when the Indians put together three hits to score both their runs. Jim Herrera and Roy Younker had RBI singles.
Buddy Hjelmaa singled again, raising his hit streak for the Caps to ten games.
Caps Note - Bob Brown, Capilano General Manager, reports he will remove turf from Cap Stadium and move it en masse to the new ball park when completed. "I have had that turf for many years," said Brown, "and won't part with it now."
