VICTORIA, May 10—Babe Jensen's only hit of the game, a single in the eighth inning, scored Jack Palmer to break a tie and give Victoria a 9-8 victory over the Salem Senators tonight in a Western International League game.
It looked like an easy win at the beginning for the Athletics, as Del Owens was sailing along with a five-run lead until things began to happen in the fifth. He issued four walks to force in a run, Joe Gedzius singled another across and Dick Sinovic brought two in with a blooper to short left. That brought on Dick Walkingshaw, who gave up back-to-back singles to Charlie Hanson and Paul Halter, then was pulled for Jim Propst. Before the inning ended, it was 7-4 Salem.
Singles by Charlie Balassi and Lou Kubiak and an infield out added a run for Victoria in the fifth, who went ahead in the sixth when Archie Wilson doubled and Sal Recca singled after a walk to Palmer.
Halter brought Salem back into 8-all tie in the seventh by homering over the centre-field fence, before Jensen put Victoria ahead an inning later with the final run of the game.
Salem tried a comeback in the ninth as Gedzius singled with two out, but Sinovic smacked a 2 and 0 fastball to Kubiak in left field to end the game.
